The Incredibles 2 is already setting animated box-office records

It’s been a long road back to the big screen for the super-powered Parr family—14 years, to be precise. But if the box office receipts from Thursday night preview screenings of The Incredibles 2 are any indication, then perhaps it was for the best to build up a decade-plus of anticipation for the sequel. At least, if you like money a lot.

And let’s be honest, no one likes money more than Disney. So perhaps Pixar and its parent company knew what they were doing with the massive time lapse between films: According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie has already broken the box-office record previously held by Finding Dory for the biggest preview gross of all time for an animated film. Actually, it might be more accurate to say that Mr. Incredible picked up that titluar blue tang fish and flung her into the distance while stomping Nemo into the ground—metaphorically, of course. The second Incredibles pulled in $18.5 million on Thursday night, more than double Finding Dory’s former record of $9.2 million.

It earned so much money, it actually entered the realm of the higher-grossing previews of all films, beating recent box-office hits like Beauty And The Beast ($16.3 million) and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($15.4 million), and almost besting Deadpool 2's $18.6 million. (“Isn’t that adorable, it thinks it’s people,” says Avengers: Infinity War, idly counting its $39 million in preview grosses.) We all knew a sequel to one of Pixar’s more beloved films was going to be one of the bigger hits of the summer, but now it’s looking like it might have a shot to beat another of Finding Dory’s records: Racing past that waterlogged sequel’s $135 million to become the biggest animated domestic opening of all time. Take that, clownfish.
