The indomitable Jessica Williams is The Incredible Jessica James
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
The Incredible Jessica James (Netflix, Friday): Former Daily Show correspondent and current 2 Dope Queens co-host Jessica Williams stars as aspiring playwright Jessica James, a New Yorker whose social circle is a “who’s who” of who you want to spend your weekend streaming time with: Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield plays her ex, The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd plays her new squeeze, and Master Of None’s Noël Wells plays her best friend. But as our own Katie Rife puts it, it’s Jessica (the Williams one and the James one) whom you’ll be most taken with, making the whole film feel like “an enjoyable hangout with a funny friend.”
Regular coverage
Orphan Black (BBC America, 10 p.m., Saturday)
Wild card
Room 104 (HBO, 11:30 p.m., Friday): The Duplass brothers’ new anthology series—in which every episode takes place in the same hotel room, just like David Lynch’s Hotel Room—doesn’t lead with its strongest entry. But the horror story “Ralphie” is at least a good indication of the “anything is possible” nature of the Duplass’ Togetherness follow-up.
