With Spider-Man director Marc Webb narrowing down his list of potential Peter Parkers to five predictably white dudes, a grassroots Internet campaign has begun pushing for Community/Mystery Team star Donald Glover to take over the role. The fire was lit on io9’s comment boards, spurred by the site's suggestion that Spider-Man might benefit from giving the lead to a black or Hispanic actor, which could be just the thing to drum up interest in the franchise again (and finally bring about racial harmony, of course). Glover responded enthusiastically on Twitter, pushing his followers to make the “#donaldforspiderman” hashtag one of the top trending topics over the weekend (Take that, “#ilovefemales”!) and picking up support from Community cast members like Alison Brie, who's started her own side campaign to be considered for Mary Jane. And because it worked for Betty White, Facebook has also gotten in on the action, with the page “Donald Glover 4 Spider-Man” currently at just under 4,000 fans. Glover has stressed that he doesn’t “want to just to be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man.” Fair enough. We’re not sure how Glover would fit into the film’s proposed “gritty reboot” scenario, but then, it’s not like we were all that invested in another Spider-Man in the first place. May as well let him audition, right?
