The Island Of Dr. Moreau

The Island Of Dr. Moreau

Marlon Brando plays a crazy, Nobel Prize-winning scientist who fills a tropical island with all sorts of freako manimaloids in this third adaptation of H.G. Wells' The Island Of Dr. Moreau. Assisting him is Val Kilmer, who seems to be competing with Brando to find who can deliver the most eccentric performance while sporting the strangest accessories. While Kilmer comes close by muttering quotations from Sherlock Holmes while wearing an oversized blue armband and a watch on each arm, Brando confirms his dominance by playing one scene with a bucket strapped to his head, rolling his eyes ecstatically when a beautiful cat-woman fills it with ice. Meanwhile, trouble stirs when some of the humanibeasts start to rebel. As a sci-fi action movie, the latest Moreau is sub-schlock. As a thinly veiled post-colonial allegory, it's dangerously close to racism. Either way, it's one of the most ridiculous movies in a ridiculous summer.
