The kazoos keep adding up in this harrowing rendition of “Yakety Sax”
The kazoo may not be a noble instrument, but it has its place in music. It sounds pretty cool in Red Hot Chili Peppers’ cover of “Love Rollercoaster.” And, uh, there’s a kazoo solo on the Raising Arizona soundtrack. But, you know, there’s a reason it doesn’t pop up in a lot of music. This new video from YouTube user EricsWurld helps explain why.
It opens harmlessly enough with a guitar and kazoo rendition of “Yakety Sax.” Soon, another kazoo is layered on top, as are instruments like piano, drums, xylophone, cowbell, triangle, gong, and many, many, many more. It’s sort of catchy at first, then comically grating, then eerily joyless. And you’re only two minutes in. The kazoos keep piling up. The buzz becomes deafening, unbearable. Soon, the cacophony takes on a sinister quality, an approximation, perhaps, of the silent screams currently coursing through the veins of our democracy.
Brace yourself for a long four minutes:
Come, for we must burn all the kazoos.
