The Killers release previously unheard Sam’s Town outtake “Peace Of Mind”
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of Sam’s Town, The Killers have released a never-before-heard outtake from the album, “Peace Of Mind.”
The tune—featuring Steinman-esque bombast and wordplay, swirling ‘60s organs, and big guitars—would have fit in just fine near the end of the second side of the bands’ sophomore release (possibly next to “My List,” which nicks the organ line). “Peace Of Mind” presumably got cut so that there weren’t two songs with “mind” in the title; lead singer Brandon Flowers himself told Chicago radio station Q101 that “Read My Mind” was the best song he has ever written, so the choice was apparently clear.
“Peace Of Mind” is featured on the anniversary reissue of Sam’s Town, alongside the Pet Shop Boys’ remix of the aforementioned “Read My Mind.” The remastered double LP is now available through Bong Load Records. “All The Pretty Faces,” another Sam’s Town outtake, is featured on the band’s odds and sods collection, Sawdust.
While critical reception to Sam’s Town was lukewarm upon its release in 2006, the album shot up to No. 1 on the U.K. Albums Chart and was voted the most underrated record of the decade by Rolling Stone readers in 2009.
