The Kills return with a new album and video

After a five-year hiatus, blues-rock duo The Kills has returned with a new album and video. Singer Alison Mosshart kept busy over the break with her other band, The Dead Weather, while guitarist Jamie Hince recovered from a series of hand surgeries. But Hince seems to be back in fine form, as Stereogum reports the band will release a new album, Ash & Ice, in June. The first single, “Doing It To Death,” is out now along with an accompanying video.

The new song is a bit of a departure from the band’s lo-fi early sound, opening with some electronic drums and using synths throughout. But the core sound of Hince’s grimy guitar and Mosshart’s husky voice is intact. The “Doing It To Death” video, which sees the duo at the center of an elaborately choreographed funeral procession, was directed by Wendy Morgan, who also shot “Tightrope” and “Dance Apocalyptic” for Janelle Monáe.
