A seemingly perennial new lead in the 1997 murder of The Notorious B.I.G. has “reinvigorated” the case, according to CNN, with the formulation of a new task force made up of members of the Los Angeles Police Department, the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, and now even the FBI currently pursuing new information. Of course, the 13-year-old investigation has had more “new breaks” over the years than Biggie had techniques dripping out his butt cheeks, but it’s never led to any arrests, despite the pervasive theory—spelled out in great detail in this 2005 Rolling Stone article—that Suge Knight was behind the attack, likely utilizing corrupt off-duty LAPD officers who worked for Knight’s Death Row Records in their off-hours. And of course, the main suspect in the case is still generically described as “an African-American man wearing a suit and bow tie,” a tip that has only ever led to various blogs since then placing the blame squarely on The Wire’s Brother Mouzone. So until this “new information” is revealed, there’s not much reason to believe that one of music’s longest-running murder mysteries is anywhere closer to being officially solved. But hey, a “task force,” that sounds serious.
