The latest Into The Woods trailer has actual singing
Considering Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods is one of the most beloved musicals in the American canon, fans have been understandably nervous about Rob Marshall’s upcoming film adaptation. First there was hubbub about proposed changes to the plot, which almost immediately proved to be false. And then the first trailer downplayed the show’s music in favor of atmospheric shots of the forest. But now musical theater nerds can breath a sigh of relief: The latest trailer proves Into The Woods will definitely have a ton of singing.
In addition to a lively rendition of the title song, this new trailer boasts an extended clip of Meryl Streep singing “Stay With Me.” It also gives a better sense of the plot machinations that bring all of these fairy tale characters together. In order to break a curse, Streep’s Witch sends the Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) on a quest to collect Jack’s cow, Little Red Riding Hood’s cape, Rapunzel’s hair, and Cinderella’s shoe. Johnny Depp’s Big Bad Wolf, Chris Pine’s vapid Prince Charming, and the giants who plague this fairy tale land get screen-time as well.
All in all, it’s a reassuring trailer for fans. While there are only two songs featured, eagle-eyed viewers can also spot clips that are likely pulled from “Hello, Little Girl,” “A Very Nice Prince,” “Agony,” “Your Fault,” and “Any Moment.” Into The Woods hits theaters December 25.
