The Leave No Trace trailer promises another portrait of self-reliant young women from the director of Winter's Bone

It’s been eight years since Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone arrived in theaters, offering up a starkly harrowing portrait on life in the margins of the Ozark Mountains, and kickstarting the steady rise of its young star, Jennifer Lawrence, from “cast member on The Bill Engvall Show” to “one of the most bankable movie stars on the planet.” Now, it’s time to see if Granik can do it again, with the trailer for her new film, Leave No Trace, arriving on the internet today, complete with another portrait of a resilient young woman surviving on the edge.

Starring Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie, the film centers on a young woman whose father is altogether too present, rather than the absent patriarch who haunted Lawrence’s character in Bone. This father-daughter team are discovered living in a campsite on public lands by the government, and forced to reintegrate into society, apparently with varying degrees of success. The film looks to be another of Granik’s portrait of outsiders fighting against their own society, except that, in this case, that society isn’t a bunch of insular meth cookers, but the one that the rest of us live in, too.

Leave No Trace arrives in select theaters on June 29.
