The Lonely Island’s new movie is a salute to boy band reunions
The long-awaited Lonely Island movie won’t be a sequel to Hot Rod. Instead, the comedy rap trio are going after another topic near and dear to both twenty- and thirtysomethings: boy band reunions. The Hollywood Reporter says that production has begun on the group’s Judd Apatow-produced movie, which “centers on a rapper whose latest album bombs” and who has to “do the unthinkable: a reunion concert with his former boy band.” Andy Samberg will star as the aforementioned bombing rapper, with Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone both attached to co-star and direct.
Though the as-yet-untitled movie reportedly aims to skewer films like Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Katy Perry’s Part Of Me, that brief story snippet suggests it’ll be more Bobby Brown and New Edition than teenybop. Still, given that The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg is playing the lead, it’s a safe assumption that Justin Timberlake will pop up in the film, and possibly the other members of ‘N Sync as well. Chris Kirkpatrick’s schedule is probably wide open.
