The Lonely Island to produce Cuban family sitcom from comedian Chris Garcia
Things didn’t work out especially well the last time The Lonely Island boys produced a TV show, but that’s not going to stop them from trying again. According to Variety, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer are going to be producing a new comedy series from comedian Chris Garcia through their Party Over Here production company. The project has been picked up by Fox, with Garcia writing the pilot alongside Modern Family’s Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh.
As for the plot of this show, Variety says it will be based on Garcia’s real life and the way his Cuban immigrant parents lied about their home address so he could get into a better school. The character based on Garcia will have to “make the most of his high school experience despite being surrounded by affluent, white surfer kids.” Plus, just to give that straightforward setup a little more potential for TV-friendly hijinks, the Garcia character will also have to deal with his dad taking ESL classes at the very same school.
The Lonely Island is developing a sitcom for Freeform called Alone Together as well, which got the greenlight back in July.
