A few years ago, the trailer for Tom Cruise’s The Mummy was uploaded with most of its sound missing, making it seem much, much scarier than it eventually ended up being. Now, the same appears to have happened to the latest Men In Black: International trailer, turning a madcap sci-fi caper into an unnerving black hole of chainsawed dialogue.

Seriously, though, it’s only two-and-a-half minutes long, but with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson’s dialogue untethered from the original’s thrumming stings and Missy Elliott backdrop, it feels like an eternity. Long stretches of deadening silence are interrupted by scraps of edited monologue, blown-out shouts, and a slew of empty, unsatisfying punchlines.

Highlights include Chris Hemsworth’s Wilhelm-esque “whoa!” (00:50) and surprised “whoo!” (01:08), both of which sound fucking jarring when sandwiched between spells of near-inaudible hiss. Liam Neeson’s voice, meanwhile, resonates as oddly robotic when divorced from the digital trickery, as if his every line was culled from a digital speech generator. Oh, and the Hemsworth “whoa!” from earlier is recycled again at the 2:20 mark. Hey, it’s tough to get a good “whoa.”
