The Mindy Project will end after next season
The Mindy Project survived cancellation on Fox by making the jump to Hulu, but it will soon come to an end for real, this time on its own terms. The streaming service announced today that the series’ next season, its sixth, will be its last.
As for why she wanted to draw the story of OB/GYN Mindy Lahiri to a close, Mindy Kaling had a playful answer and a more serious one in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news. “I mean this half-jokingly, but at a certain point it was like, I think she’s dated every man in Manhattan,” Kaling said. “Sex and the City lasted for, what, six seasons with 10 episodes each? I don’t know that there’s been a show about a woman trying to find love in New York City that has lasted quite this long. And frankly, there’s no more actors in Hollywood left to date.”
Striking a more sincere note, she went on to describe how the series has “gotten into [its characters] romantic and interior lives,” adding: “We started this series when she was single, and now she’s married and has a kid and she has a stepdaughter, and it kind of just felt like [a few] more episodes was all we needed to wind this down.” In the most recent episode Mindy proposes to Ben, a nurse played by Bryan Greenberg. The final season will premiere in September of this year, so prepare to say goodbye for real this time.
