The institution of Miss Golden Globe—in which the usually female spawn of a celebrity serves as both eye candy and air traffic controller for the titular awards ceremony—is a peculiar one that can feel like a relic of bygone days. But, according to an extensive story about the history of the gig in The Hollywood Reporter, it’s not an easy task and can involve bodily injury and really pissy famous people.
As past Miss Golden Globes tell it, the job is a logistical nightmare that involves shuffling winners and presenters around. Mavis Spencer, daughter of Alfre Woodard, said: “It isn’t as easy as you think, especially after the actors have gotten a few drinks into them.” Spencer ended the night with two fractured bones in her foot after someone involved in The Hangover stepped on it. (Reminder: The Hangover won Best Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy in 2010. What a time.) Colin Farrell also made a stink about standing next to Spencer who is 5’11” and was wearing 6” heels. “[He] was one of the presenters and just looked at me and said, ‘I‘m not standing next to her. I’m not doing it,’” Spencer recalled. “I was a bit taken aback. And he was like, ‘Darling, I really don’t mean that in a bad way — but you’re huge.’” Greer Grammer, meanwhile, was scorned by Prince in 2015, though that basically amounts to an honor. “I was like, ‘OK, now you’re going to exit this way, Prince.’ He just gave me this look like, ‘Who are you?’ and exited in the opposite direction,” she recounted. We should all be so lucky to have that experience.
