The Mountain Goats are getting ready to go back on tour, possibly with new music
Having just wrapped up a tour that took them from Tallahassee to New York City, The Mountain Goats are taking a whole three months off before hitting the road again this summer. The now-solidified quartet, which includes multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, will kick off the 13-city U.S. tour in late July that will include stops in not one, but two Bloomingtons. But fans needn’t worry that all the loading, unloading, and sound checks have in any way taken their toll on the band. In a new missive posted to the Mountain Goats site, John Darnielle sounds eager to perform, partially in an effort to test out the new material that oh, by the way, they’re currently working on: “It’s where the road ahead becomes clearest. It’s where the indicators glow brightest. It’s where we live.”
Darnielle didn’t go into detail about the shape the new music is taking, as it’s still mostly gestating in “the secret darkness,” or whether he ever got around to finishing his off-the-cuff, fundraising-incentive track “Wizard Level.” But he did note that the mostly-autumnal tour (there’s a two-month break between the first and second dates) will go “full electric” and play to bigger crowds than the more intimate venues of this spring’s jaunt. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 29, and the complete list of dates and venues (see if your Bloomington is one of the lucky ones!) is below.
