If you ignore the fact that there’s already something called The People’s Choice Awards, then the MTV Movie Awards are kind of like the awards show of the people. It is, after all, the one place where The Maze Runner can beat Selma and The Hunger Games can beat everything, but it’s not that the MTV Movie Awards are more valid or less pretentious than the Oscars. It’s just that a lot of people really love The Hunger Games, so it’s good that there’s an award that specifically caters to that audience and respects its voice. Also, while the Oscars refused to even give Star Wars: The Force Awakens the Best Picture nomination that it deserved, the MTV Movie Awards righted that wrong by giving it Movie Of The Year. So, yes, maybe the MTV Movie Awards really are more valid and less pretentious than the Oscars.
Another thing that sets the MTV Movie Awards apart from other shows is that the ceremony itself doesn’t air live on TV, which means we can tell you who all of the winners are without making you sit through a few hours of commercials for acne lasers, new episodes of Teen Mom: Origins, and a marathon of Real World/Catfish Challenge: All Stars.
As we mentioned, The Force Awakens took home the top prize, with Amy winning Best Documentary and Straight Outta Compton winning Best True Story—an award that was definitely not invented just so both Straight Outta Compton and Star Wars could win things. Leonardo DiCaprio continued his winning streak by getting Best Male Performance, Jennifer Lawrence won for Best Hero (but not Best Female Performance), and Best Villain went to Adam Driver. Also, as we previously reported, Melissa McCarthy was deemed worthy of the Comedic Genius Award.
As for the hilarious comedy bits that hosts Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson peppered the show with, you’ll actually have to watch the ceremony tonight on MTV to see those. The rest of the awards, though, are below.
