The MTV Movie Awards will now honor TV, too
The line between TV and movies gets blurrier all the time. Take O.J.: Made In America, which originally aired as a five-part TV miniseries on ESPN before going on to win this year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. And what’s good enough for the Oscars had better be good enough for the MTV Movie Awards, which are catching up to the peak-TV zeitgeist and re-branding themselves as The MTV Movie & TV Awards. Along with the format change, this year the network will also debut a daylong “Movie & Television Festival” featuring food, live entertainment, and appearances from your favorite celebrities and possibly Kevin Hart.
In a press release announcing the change, MTV president Chris McCarthy says, “We’re living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you’re watching it in a theater or on TV.” MTV also has its own original TV programming, a potential conflict of interest which was not addressed in the press release. The “MTV Movie & Reruns of Teen Wolf Awards” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
