The Muppets have redeemed the whole concept of selfies
Blame phones with front-facing cameras, or human vanity, or the Oxford English Dictionary for making “selfie” their 2013 word of the year. No matter who you blame, the selfie is here to stay, so we might as well start having fun with it.
Take a page from The Muppets’ official Instagram account, which has been uploading a charming series of Muppet selfies. Like all selfies, some are better than others. Gonzo’s nose barely makes it into his shot, while the framing on Kermit’s pic is spot on. All give a glimpse into backstage life at Muppet HQ—if you’ve ever wondered what’s in the break room at The Jim Henson Company (a lot of Coffee Mate and 5-Hour Energy, as it turns out), here’s your chance to find out.
The pics are sprinkled in with marketing materials for Muppets Most Wanted, for which this is most definitely a promotional stunt. But whoever’s behind the series has a good sense of humor about it (“This is the fanciest calculator we’ve ever seen!,” reads the caption on Statler and Waldorf’s pic), so put on your sincerity goggles and enjoy.
