The nation demanded that Lou Reed make a record with Metallica, and so it shall be

The rock-legend collaboration that launched a million Twitter jokes (and that was just last night), the Metallica/Lou Reed record that you didn’t know you wanted is definitely in the works, according to an announcement posted on Metallica’s web site. How? And more importantly, why? Apparently, this collaboration kicked off that collaboration.

Sessions wrapped last week with 10 songs—written by Reed and co-arranged by Metallica—that are nearly ready to be incredulously consumed by the public. (Lars Ulrich says the record is “90 percent” complete though there are no release plans yet.) As for what the record sounds like, Sound Of The City blog points to a reliably gushing Rolling Stone story about the project, which suggests “a raging union of [Reed’s] 1973 noir classic, Berlin, and Metallica's '86 crusher, Master of Puppets.” Now there’s two records we never thought of playing simultaneously.
