The new Big Little Lies trailer has lots of snark, not many lies
Big Little Lies is HBO’s latest prestigious celebrity-filled limited series, and this one seems to star every famous white woman under the sun (plus Adam Scott). Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern play tightly wound grade school moms in a ritzy coastal community. Meanwhile, Shailene Woodley plays the young single mom who gets caught up in their world of gossip, intrigue, masquerade balls, and (gasp!) murder. Zoë Kravitz and Alexander Skarsgård are also on hand to lend their respective diacritical marks to the prestige project, which is created by David E. Kelley and adapted from a 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty.
Big Little Lies is billed as a dark comedy, although, like the teaser, this trailer leans a little more on the dark than the comedy. Talking head interviews explain the cutthroat underbelly of the Monterey mom community as we watch Woodley’s character being brought into the snarky, passive-aggressive fold. The exact narrative of the series remains a little unclear, but the trailer ominously ends with a voice intoning, “So we’re, like, seriously using the word ‘murder’?” Big Little Lies premieres on HBO on February 19.
