As if it’s not bad enough that Paul Feig has the audacity to burden the world with a female-led Ghostbusters movie that’s actually getting good reviews, it now appears as though he’s planning to release an extended cut of the film. In an interview with Collider, the 53-year-old director—who co-wrote the script with Katie Dippold (The Heat)—revealed that the eventual Blu-ray release of the reboot will include an extra 15 minutes or so of footage with completed visual effects, plus a bunch of deleted scenes.
Apparently, there was a lot of material to pull from for this special edition, as Feig admits that the initial cut was longer than the long version of Gone With The Wind:
The editor’s first cut was four hours and 15 minutes, and I trimmed that down to a slim three and a half hours … We generate a lot of stuff, and I always want to have all the underpinnings of a big, emotional story. And because of that it just added a lot of extra scenes that then as you’re going through, you know, you have to make a lot of choices because I knew I had to bring this down under two hours. And you just start weeding and saying, “What do people want to delve deeper into, and what do we wanna just kind of skirt through and get to the fun parts?”
