The new Magic Mike XXL trailer appears to show some semblance of plot

Warner Bros.’ marketing department appears to have learned its lesson from the first Magic Mike movie, and is marketing the sequel, Magic Mike XXL, as the cheeky, self-aware all-star Chippendales revue audiences were clamoring for the first time. It’s an effective strategy—the initial teaser has been met with lusty cheering and catcalling every time The A.V. Club has seen it at a screening, suggesting that if Channing Tatum and his stripper friends Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Kevin Nash, and Adam Rodriguez don’t spent at least 60 percent of the film with their shirts off, packs of crazed women (and a few men) may start burning down the multiplexes, making that Fifty Shades Of Grey movie-theater attack seem tame by comparison.

But, because you can’t please everybody all the time, there has to be some plot in between those stripping scenes. The new full-length trailer, which Warner Bros. released on its YouTube channel earlier today, reveals some of that plot, involving the guys’ need to come up with some new stripper moves before the big male-stripper convention, held, appropriately enough, in “Dirty” Myrtle Beach. The new trailer also gives us a first look at Jada Pinkett Smith, who replaces Matthew McConaughey as the Malcom McLaren to the fellas’ Sex Pistols, as well as new cast members Donald Glover and Andie MacDowell. We’ll see who keeps their shirt on when Magic Mike XXL grinds into theaters on July 1.
