The new Man From U.N.C.L.E. trailer gleefully goes where many spy flicks have gone before

“Things could get a little messy—end of the world, that kind of thing,” is a telling piece of dialogue from the new Comic-Con trailer for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which effectively sells its spy adventure tropes by treating them more as ornamentation than as substance. The five-minute trailer shows more of the movie than some would care to see ahead of its release—including apparently every beat of an opening chase scene—but it’s enough to showcase director Guy Ritchie’s penchant for mixing manic action with wry comedy. The film, a remake of the 1960s American television series, takes place at the height of the Cold War and follows a CIA agent (Henry Cavill) and a KGB agent (Armie Hammer) who must overcome their differences and work together to stop a terrorist group with a nuke. This of course leads to bickering, shooting, explosions, and sex with beautiful women. Ritchie isn’t reinventing the spy comedy subgenre here, but with this much panache evident from early trailers, he’s at least set to re-energize it.
