The new Spider-Man film will be a John Hughes movie (except not really)

In a new interview, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige tells Birth.Movies.Death that the new back-to-high-school Spider-Man film will be inspired in part by the films of John Hughes. According to Feige, the movie is “a soap opera in high school” inspired by Hughes joints like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, only with more upside-down combat. Feige explained, “We’re inspired by [Hughes], and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.” And who doesn’t want to see Peter Parker make a Pixy Stix Sandwich while sitting in detention?

Feige also acknowledged Spider-Man’s expansive rogues gallery, suggesting that the upcoming movie will feature a villain who hasn’t appeared previously in a Spider-Man film. Perhaps fans will finally see Mysterio, or Kraven the Hunter, or even Vulture. It’s a shame they already used Rhino, because nothing would be more Hughesian than having him warn Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, “Don’t mess with the Rhino, young man. You’ll get the horn.” Maybe some asshole janitor could say that anyway—Stan Lee always needs a cameo.
