The new Star Trek gets an official name that we’ve already heard rumored

Presumably attempting to top the nonsensical title Star Trek Into Darkness, the third film in the rebooted sci-fi series will officially be called Star Trek Beyond. That’s long been the rumored title for the film, which is currently in production in Vancouver. But director Justin Lin confirmed the news on his Twitter account, where he also shared an image of the Starfleet insignia and the message, “Let the next Starfleet voyage begin!”

Of course, just what Star Trek Beyond means is anyone’s guess. Beyond what? The sea? The lights? The barricade? Since the last film ended with the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise departing on a five-year exploratory mission, it’s possible this film will see them go beyond the Alpha Quadrant (which they technically did when they visited Qo’noS in the last film) or even beyond charted space into the Delta Quadrant (because that worked out so well for Star Trek: Voyager). Or perhaps, since the script was co-written by pop culture-loving Simon Pegg, we’re meant to take the title as a subtle nod to Buzz Lightyear’s catchphrase, “To infinity and beyond.”

Whatever the case, if this third film is successful, we can look forward to years of more vague titles like Star Trek Further, Star Trek Over There, and Star Trek Outta Here.
