The Office spin-off movie sets up shop at Netflix

Showing the kind of business acumen that was sorely lacking in his David Brent character, Ricky Gervais has just announced that he’s gotten Netflix to snap up his The Office spin-off movie. Gervais shared the news earlier today in an interview on the Opie With Jim Norton Show on SiriusXM, despite it being top secret stuff.

The project, titled David Brent: Life On The Road, was written by Gervais, who’s reprising his role as the obnoxious manager. But rather than have a camera crew document his incompetence in a paper-company setting, Life On The Road will follow David Brent as he “chases his dream of rock stardom by self-financing a U.K. tour with his band Foregone Conclusion.”

Gervais seems happy to forego a theatrical release for the film, preferring to screen it on “20 million” laptop screens instead of for five million or so moviegoers. This will be his second film for the streaming giant, as his Special Correspondents debuted on the site earlier this year. But Netflix doesn’t appear to have been put off by the toothless satire therein. Life On The Road will debut in the U.K. on August 19. Here’s the teaser, which Gervais released back in April.
