The Oscar nominations will finally be announced before the Golden Globes for once

The Academy has announced that the next Oscar nominations, typically reserved for near the end of January, have been moved up all the way to January 10—placing them three days before the Golden Globes air for the first time ever. Officially the decision was made to provide Academy members with more time to see nominated films before voting, not to mention come to grips with the strange, new world of using computers to vote on things, instead of just using it to look at photos of grandchildren and enter in their credit card numbers. But unofficially, the move disrupts the usual flow of awards season, where the Oscars always seem like an afterthought once the Globes have already chosen the best films of the year starring the famous people they want to have at their party.
