Shortly before this year’s especially anticlimactic Oscars, it was announced that the Academy was considering moving the ceremony to a month earlier, thereby combating the award season fatigue that always sets in by around mid-January, after every entertainment guild, critical body, and local Webelos troop has all but nullified any element of surprise with their own trophy-lobbing rituals. At the time it sounded kind of exciting, like it would potentially shake things up for real—as opposed to “shaking things up” by adding green screens and James Franco—and therefore, of course, it’s not actually happening. Next year’s Academy Awards will take place on February 26, just a day earlier than they did this year. On the bright side, this is likely the last time you will hear about the Oscars until at least, say, October.
