Maybe, just maybe, Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace would have been more coherent and enjoyable if its core characters, like Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar Binks, and troubled little moppet Anakin Skywalker, had just been portrayed as a bunch of incompetent, self-sabotaging dirtbags instead of as actual heroes. That’s the underlying premise behind “It’s Always Sunny In Tatooine,” a brief, clever video mashup by Jose Anaya, who has taken some Phantom Menace footage and shaped it into a typical cold opening from the FXX series It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It honestly does not take much to transform the 1999 George Lucas film into an episode of Sunny, just the addition of a few well-placed title cards and the swapping of the musical score, with John Williams’ score being benched in favor of the campy, pizzicato stock music from the series. The title is doubly appropriate, meanwhile, since Tatooine is lit by two suns. (In a nice touch, the locale is identified as “Tattooine, PA.” The extra “t” perhaps signals a preponderance of regrettable tattoos among the citizenry.)
Just like basically every episode of Sunny, this one starts out with a group of idiots arguing about ridiculous nonsense in a dank, poorly-lit room. Of course, these particular idiots are jabbering about pod racing and lightsabers, but the general tenor of the conversation is the same. Thus, when Qui-Gon grabs Jar Jar’s tongue, it becomes a Dennis-like act of aggression toward, say, Mac or Charlie. And, just like on Sunny, this seemingly innocent and utterly trivial conversation will go on to have catastrophic, life-ruining consequences. Cue “Temptation Sensation” by Heinz Kiessling.
