The Producers Guild likes the same movies as everyone else—and also Deadpool
The Producers Guild of America selected a familiar list of films to nominate for their top prize, the Daryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which is a fancy name for Best Picture. Among them are: Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell Or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester By The Sea, Moonlight, and look, there’s Deadpool worming its way into another awards-season race. The potty-mouthed X-Men spinoff seems like it should be a shocking outlier, but it’s already been recognized by both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Writers Guild. Now the question becomes: Can it get the Academy’s attention? Maybe: The Producers Guild nominees are typically a good sign of what will be up for Best Picture at the Oscars, give or take a couple of choices. Deadpool still seems like an unlikely choice, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
In its animated category, the producers nominated Finding Dory, Kubo And The Two Strings, Moana, The Secret Life Of Pets, and Zootopia. Meanwhile, the documentaries they chose include Dancer, The Eagle Huntress, Life, Animated, O.J.: Made In America, and Tower.
