The Oscars are almost here, which means it’s Razzies time yet again, the annual ceremony that turns the harvesting of low-hanging cinematic fruit into a national sport. This year’s awards saw something of an upset, though, with the Razzie voters apparently remembering that nobody actually cared about the much-nominated Zoolander 2, going after more high-profile critical demons instead. In fact, outside of one win for Kristen Wiig, the Razzies split themselves pretty evenly between Zack Snyder’s Batman V. Superman, and Dinesh D’souza’s Hillary’s America: The Secret History Of The Democratic Party.
And while our usual criticism of the Razzies—that they focus on easy targets, instead of diving into the vast trove of shitty filmmaking 2016 had to offer—stands, it’s hard to argue with an assessment of D’Souza’s bizarro documentary as the year’s worst movie, or D’Souza himself as the worst director. The BVS hate seems more knee-jerk, though, nailing the film more for being famous and mediocre than reaching the heights of true cinematic badness. (That being said, it’s probably an accomplishment in its own right to turn a fight between Batman and Superman into such a visually unremarkable grind.)
