The ridiculously named Happy Death Day is getting a ridiculously named sequel

Blumhouse Happy Death Day was a bloodless PG-13 slasher that benefitted from its core gimmick, which was basically “what if Groundhog Day but horror?” In it, a college party girl, for some reason, relives the day of her murder over and over until she can find a way to prevent it. It’s fine, but would’ve hit harder had it scaled back the drama and fully embraced the camp at the core of its premise. The good news is that the title of its upcoming sequel, revealed by Variety, points to a more playful tone. That title? Happy Death Day 2U, which is a very ridiculous, very good title.

Jessica Rothe, who played the aforementioned victim in the original, will return for the sequel, which will find Christopher Landon (son of Michael!) returning as writer and director. Plot details remain scarce aside from a brief synopsis that says “dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.” In an interview with Collider from earlier this year, Rothe intriguingly described the sequel as a “Back To the Future type of genre film,” saying that “the sequel joins us right from where we left off” and “explains a lot of things in the first one that didn’t get explained.”

Happy Death Day 2U hits cheekily hits theaters on Valentine’s Day of 2019.
