The rival teams from Dodgeball reunite for charity in new video
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story has become a sports cult film of sorts—one of the best of the Frat Pack movies—telling the story of the scrappy dodgeball team at Average Joe’s gym, led by Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn), going against Ben Stiller’s White Goodman and the formidable Purple Cobras from his Globo Gym. The film features everyone from Rip Torn to Missi Pyle to Stephen Root in noteworthy roles, as well as sayings like, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball,” fitness-obsessed White’s ineffective insults, and unhinged color commentary by Jason Bateman’s Pepper Brooks—all contributing to the 2004 movie’s considerable decade-plus legacy.
Now those memorable championship teams are facing off again, this time for charity. A new video by Dodgeball auteur Rawson Marshall Thurber shows Stiller as White Goodman offering viewers the chance to play on the Purple Cobras, only to be quickly challenged by Vaughn, Christine Taylor (Stiller’s wife), and Justin Long from the Average Joes. There’s even a wrench toss, for nostalgia purposes.
By donating to the Stiller Foundation through Omaze.com, you enter a contest for the chance to play on one of the two dodgeball teams, have pizza with Stiller afterward, and get put up in a four-star hotel. Other possible prizes include a mountain bike, a set of Globo Gym sweatcuffs, and a signed DVD. The Stiller Foundation helps children all over the world, so it sounds like a fun event for a good cause. Frankly, the video just makes us long for the long-discussed-but-never-delivered Dodgeball sequel. Stiller in particular looks like no time has passed; White Goodman appears fitter than ever.
Stiller talked to EW about how much he enjoyed pulling on the old purple spandex to play White again, and the origins of this character overall:
It all kind of comes from the Tony Robbins impression that I tried to do on The Ben Stiller Show, and then it became Tony Perkis from Heavyweights and then it morphed into White Goodman. I don’t have that many moves, really. It’s funny because once you do the makeup and get the wig on, then you’re suddenly like, “Oh yeah, I got this.”
He has his own favorite line from the movie—“‘Nobody makes me bleed my own blood’ is one that has always kinda stuck with me”—and some White Goodman-style parting advice for those who enter the contest: “Omaze is giving people the chance to go with a Winner or a La-loser. And Purple Cobras have much cooler uniforms.” You can enter for your own chance to win at omaze.com.
