The Roots made a musical out of NBA history
Every so often, the worlds of sports and musical theater intersect. Take, for instance, Damn Yankees, or more recent productions like Bring It On The Musical, Lysistrata Jones, and the stage adaptation of Rocky. Now, The Roots are adding another entry into this canon; it’s not going to be on Broadway, but who knows what the future holds. According to Billboard, the band’s members have written a musical about the NBA called The Evolution of Greatness that they will put on before the All-Star Game February 18. The likes of Michael B. Jordan, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jidenna, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Daveed Diggs, one of the original stars of Hamilton, will be in the company. Perhaps The Roots’ involvement in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winner—Ahmir Thompson and Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Questlove and Black Thought, produced the recording—inspired them to do write their own historical epic in song.
