The Russo brothers are also #TeamKendrick when it comes to Squirrel Girl casting
When Anna Kendrick threw out the idea of playing Squirrel Girl in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she probably didn’t expect the idea to gain so much traction so soon. After all, Marvel might have trademarked the title back in 2014, but there’s been no other indication that a film ever be in development. That didn’t diminish Kendrick’s enthusiasm for the part—few things would—and neither did her lack of knowledge about the superhero, who’s not quite as well known as some of her Marvel contemporaries.
Kendrick’s already nabbed the support of Edgar Wright, her Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World director (and ex-boyfriend), but she’s facing some serious competition from Stranger Things’ Shannon Purser, who’s launched her own Squirrel Girl campaign. As the race heats up, MCU players will be forced to pick a side before duking it out in an oddly empty airport. Joe and Anthony Russo, who are up to their ears in Marvel films, recently cast their “votes” for Kendrick. The Avengers: Infinity War directors told Yahoo Movies that Kendrick playing Doreen Green would be “perfect casting.”
The Russos also said they’re big Kendrick fans, though they aren’t so anxious to see her in the role that they’re going to work the character into the next supersize Avengers movie. But what about Captain Marvel? Brie Larson was just cast as Carol Danvers last month, and the Russos did introduce the latest new Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in Captain America: Civil War, so it wouldn’t be outside of the realm of possibility. Well, the Russos didn’t deny that Captain Marvel would show up sooner rather than later, so let’s just assume it’s a done deal, if only because we can’t wait to see Larson suit up.
