The Russo brothers are plotting some sort of mysterious, hyper-ambitious "global television franchise"
Fresh off the finger-snapping fun of Avengers: Infinity War—and even as they’re deep into post-production work on the still-untitled Avengers 4—brothers Joe and Anthony Russo are revving up their next big project. Amazon announced today that it was teaming up with the pair—who got their start in TV, back before they made the move to billion-dollar movie franchises—for some kind of extremely mysterious-sounding “global television franchise.”
We’ll be honest: We have no frickin’ clue what this thing is all about, but it sounds aggressively ambitious; hell, the press release for the announcement uses the word “layered” in two separate paragraphs. Amazon’s keeping extremely quiet about the plot or logline for the project, but did reveal that there’ll be some sort of “fire-starter” mothership series for the whole affair, which will then bud out to a number of local language shows, all of which “are meant to enhance the entire entertainment experience and will be available for the viewer to deep dive into an imagined layered” (!) “world.”
The presumption here is that this’ll all be original IP, too, meaning the Russos will have pretty much complete control over the whole whatever-it-is they’re trying to build. These guys have obviously earned a lot of capital in the entertainment industry over the last few years; it sounds like they’re about to spend it in about as dramatic a fashion as they possibly could.
