The Russo brothers might direct Avengers: Infinity War

According to unconfirmed reports, the job of directing the Avengers sequels might pass to Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers behind the much-lauded Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the much-anticipated Captain America: Civil War. This comes from Deadline, which reports insider talk of the Russos “tak[ing] the reins of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that next film that will shoot back to back.” That last part refers to Avengers: Infinity War, which is being split into two films.

Whedon wrote and directed The Avengers and its upcoming sequel, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, due on May 1, 2015. Many had assumed that Whedon would finish out the Infinity War saga, to maintain consistency in his style of near-Shakespearean tête–à–têtes between Norse gods followed by shawarma references. However, it is technically possible for Whedon to relinquish his directorial duties but still pen the script for Infinity War, so there’s a flicker of hope for a “mewling quim” callback in the two-part finale.
