The SAG Awards honored Spotlight and Leonardo DiCaprio
No offense to whoever came up with the Screen Actors Guild Awards (probably some actor), but the idea of calling the trophy “The Actor” is blatantly terrible. The presenters at the ceremony must to be aware of this as well, since they’re the ones who actually have to suffer the displeasure of saying “The Actor for Best Actor” in front of their friends and colleagues. They could at least give The Actor a name like the Academy Awards did for its trophy, since “The Steven for Best Actor” at least rolls off the tongue a little better.
Anyway, at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Actor for Best Actor went to an actor by the name of Leonardo DiCaprio, honoring the bear-fighting work he did in The Revenant. This is a bigger deal than most SAG Award winners, because SAG voters have correctly predicted the last 11 winners of the Best Actor Oscar, and DiCaprio’s streak of Oscar losses rivals the Chicago Cubs’ World Series drought in terms of national embarrassments. The SAG Awards weren’t just about DiCaprio, though, as Idris Elba won The Actor for Best Supporting Male Actor, and Brie Larson won for Best Female Actor In A Leading Role. Spotlight won for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture, Downton Abbey won the TV drama equivalent, and Orange Is The New Black won the comedy version.
