The Screen Actors Guild offers its good-looking endorsement of 12 Years A Slave, Breaking Bad, Edie Falco
After smiling politely while the Producers and Writers Guilds offered their expert, yet generally not-as-good-looking-or-famous opinions on the year’s best entertainment, the Screen Actors Guild finally had its say through its far more symmetrical face. While we’ve become inured to seeing a lot of these names by now, there were a few deviations for the norm. For instance, on the film side, SAG was the first group to pay some serious attention to the upcoming August: Osage County and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
It was also the first group and/or entity to decide that Daniel Bruhl was actually a supporting actor in Rush, possibly owing to the fact that he is, again, not-as-good-looking-or-famous as Chris Hemsworth. And in that same category, it gave Captain Phillips’ Barkhad Abdi his first big push toward Oscar consideration, while also recognizing the late James Gandolfini’s work in Enough Said—so, lots of underdogs and sentimental favorites to root for, for different reasons. Alternately, you could focus bitterly on the fact that it ignored others, like Her's Joaquin Phoenix, All Is Lost's Robert Redford, and everyone involved with Inside Llewyn Davis and The Wolf Of Wall Street.
On the TV side, Gandolfini’s former on-screen wife Edie Falco became the most-nominated performer in SAG history by getting another best actress nod for Nurse Jackie. She’s now surpassed the previous record-holder, David Hyde Pierce, with her 20 lifetime nominations—a record she shares with Alec Baldwin, who also made it to 20 by picking up his final two obligatory nods for 30 Rock. (With Nurse Jackie renewed for a sixth season, and Baldwin in an ongoing feud with cameras, it seems likely Falco won’t have to share it for long.) That sense of history repeating is borne out in the rest of the TV nominations which—aside from the inclusion of Netflix’s Arrested Development and House Of Cards, and some recognition for Scandal—seem like they could have been copied and pasted from any of the past few years. But no, the list below was copied and pasted from this year.
