The son of Sons Of Anarchy arrives with more Shakespeare and motorcycles
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Tuesday, September 4. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Mayans M.C. (AMC, 10 p.m.): There’s been a real dearth of motorcycle-ridin’ in narrative television lately, but Kurt Sutter and Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James are here to help correct that imbalance. But this spin-off is more than just Sons Of Anarchy 2.0, and not just because they snagged the great Edward James Olmos; as Sutter told the audience at the ATX Festival, “My job is to transition the mythology from Sons and honor that… We want to acknowledge where we came from and those fans and balance that with a show that’s original and different and doesn’t feel like a Latino version of Sons of Anarchy.” Look for more on this series from Danette Chavez.
Regular coverage
Wild card
The Purge (simulcast on Syfy and USA, 10 p.m.): Hey, you like those Purges? USA and Syfy have some purges. In his pre-air review, our own Alex McLevy said this small-screen spin-off series “tries its hand at exploring a broad swath of timely social issues, from deindustrialization to income inequality to an extremist political party seizing control of the levers of power. Mostly, though, it wants you to have fun.” Sounds like it’s worth a shot, and should not be purrrrged from our DVR subscriptions yet.
