The squad is reunited in the full trailer for On My Block season 2
One of the best new shows of 2018 is finally coming back for a second season. We’re not talking about Killing Eve—also, thankfully, returning soon—or Pose, or our many other new TV obsessions, but one favorite that didn’t quite get the recognition it deserved: Netflix’s On My Block. The teen dramedy about a group of high schoolers living in South Central Los Angeles became Netflix’s most binged show of 2018 when it debuted a whole year ago. After ending on a startling cliffhanger in the season finale, On My Block is finally returning for season 2 later this month, and it looks like another delightful, bingeable blast.
The first full trailer for the second season takes us back to the fictional neighborhood of Freeridge, Los Angeles where, thankfully, Monse (Sierra Capri), Jamal (Brett Gray), Cesar (Diego Tinoco), and Ruby (Jason Genao) are happily reunited as they enter sophomore year. As fans will remember, the season finale—spoiler alert—took a devastating turn when Ruby (Jason Genao) and his crush Olivia (Ronni Hawk) were shot at her quinceañera by a rival gang member and left lying in a pool of blood. The new trailer doesn’t directly address the violent incident (a previous teaser already did that), but makes it clear Ruby survived the shooting. Olivia, though, remains unseen.
The first season of On My Block managed to blend playful coming-of-age humor with heavier narratives about growing up around gang violence. It refreshingly hopped from sweet stories about friendship and young love to a mysterious treasure hunt to one about the pressures of gang recruitment. Season 2 looks just as promising, with the squad rehearsing new dance routines, Jamal freaking out about the RollerWorld cash, and Ruby’s Abuela (Peggy Blow) acting as nutty as ever. On My Block returns on March 29, so if you haven’t had a chance to watch this charming series yet, now’s the time to dive in.
