The Stranger Things and Hidden Figures ensembles win top prizes at Screen Actors Guild Awards
We already heard about the films and TV shows that the Producers Guild liked earlier this weekend, but now it’s time for the real stars to come out (no offense, producers) for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The SAG awards are the kind of thing that usually only appeals to people who like awards shows or really care about what’s going on in the worlds of movie and TV, but with everything going on in the country these days, the ceremony had a very unique vibe that combined protest and solidarity.
As for the awards themselves, though, they were largely uncontroversial, with pretty much all of the winners being tough to argue with. At this point, nobody’s going to disagree that Sarah Paulson deserves as many awards as possible for her work on People V. O.J. Simpson (she won best actress in a limited series) or that Julia Louis-Dreyfus should keep getting awards for Veep (she won best actress in a comedy series). The other TV picks were similarly solid, with Stranger Things winning the best drama ensemble and The Crown pulling off some relatively surprising upsets in a couple of categories.
On the movie side, Mahershala Ali’s win for Moonlight and Viola Davis’ for Fences were well-deserved, as was Emma Stone for La La Land (the film’s only win, a rarity this season) and Denzel Washington for Fences. In the end, the best film ensemble award went to Hidden Figures, with Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, and Octavia Spencer totally shocked at the honor.
