The techno-pumping trailer for Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups stars everyone

A couple of hours after announcing that Terrence Malick’s long-awaited Knight Of Cups will premiere at next month’s Berlin Film Festival, FilmNation Entertainment has released the first trailer for the film, which showcases the reclusive director’s unparalleled talent for getting actors to jump around, then stand really close to each other without making eye contact.

Deadline has the cryptic official synopsis:

“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?”

Knight Of Cups was shot by regular Malick cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Its cast list includes Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Ben Kingsley, Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer, Jason Clarke, Wes Bentley, Nick Offerman, Antonio Banderas, Thomas Lennon, Shea Whigham, Kevin Corrigan, and Ryan O’Neal––some of whom may actually be in the finished film.

It should not be confused wit that other long-awaited (and still untitled) Terrence Malick movie shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, which also stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman. That one takes place in Austin; this one appears to take place in Los Angeles.

No release date is set.
