The Tigger Movie

The Tigger Movie

Though the title conjures up any number of ill-conceived spin-off projects based on characters appealing only in small doses (The Tortellis, The Martin Short Show), The Tigger Movie is in actuality a feature-length Winnie The Pooh cartoon with a bit more Tigger than usual. In it, the irrepressible feline begins to question his long-stated dictum, openly wondering whether the wonderful thing about being a Tigger is that he's the only one. Suddenly aware of an emptiness at the core of his stuffed soul, he begins to search for his family, unaware that he's already surrounded by the best family anyone could wish for: a bear consumed by his need for honey, a depressive donkey, an obsessive-compulsive kangaroo, a psychotically officious rabbit, a deluded owl, and a dwarfish, slow-witted pig. By now, Disney's version of Pooh and friends has unfortunately all but supplanted A.A. Milne's books in the public's imagination. But as literary substitutes go, Disney's Pooh holds its own charmingly. The Tigger Movie is, for the most part, no exception. It's a gentle, warmhearted movie that's bogged down only by unexceptional songs, one of which features some ill-considered pop-culture references that shatter the Poohniverse carefully preserved elsewhere. For the most part, however, The Tigger Movie is ideal children's entertainment, which ought to ensure its status as a video babysitter for years to come—at which point it may not even be preceded, as the theatrical version is, by Lou Bega performing "Disney Mambo No. 5."
