The Tomb Raider (movie) reboot digs up a director

After killing a number of dinosaurs and evil treasure hunters, MGM and Warner Bros. have finally uncovered an ancient temple that contains an important piece for their reboot of the Tomb Raider movie series: a director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studios have hired Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, who is best known for making a Norwegian disaster movie called The Wave. (Which is to say that he’s probably not very well known to most American audiences.)

We reported in February that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Evan Daughterty had signed on to write the script, but THR says the studio is taking another pass at it and Transformers 5 co-writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet is now in negotiations to write the next draft. The movie will reportedly follow the “first adventure” of Tomb Raider hero Lara Croft, but it’s not clear if it will have any relation to the rebooted Tomb Raider video game series, which also recently covered Croft’s first adventure. Considering the history of video games being made into a movies, though, it’s a safe bet that they’ll be as different as possible.
