The trailer for Child 44 has serial killers, communists, Gary Oldman
What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than with a film that places you squarely in the icy tundra of Soviet-era Russia? That’s what the people behind Child 44 are betting on, anyway. The thriller, which opens April 17, stars Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Noomi Rapace alongside a pretty great supporting cast that includes Jason Clarke, Charles Dance, Vincent Cassel, and many others. The probable reason for all the big-name involvement? Screenwriter Richard Price, he of the many superb crime novels and teleplay credits for The Wire. Director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) seems to be going for maximum gloom in this trailer, but given the subject matter (serial killer of children in post-World War II Soviet Union), that’s probably for the best. We’d make an easy joke about the value of making everyone speak English with a Russian accent (realism!), but honestly, this will probably be pretty great.
