The trailer for J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy is definitely for grown-ups

J.K. Rowling’s first post-Harry Potter novel, The Casual Vacancy, was also the author’s first foray into adult literature—and while it received mixed reviews, it ultimately demonstrated Rowling’s ability to write for more than just tweens who love magic. The 2012 novel was picked up last year to be adapted as a miniseries for BBC, which will also deal with the complex social and political dynamics of a small English town following the sudden death of one of its leaders.

Casual Vacancy will have three one-hour episodes, with the first premiering February 15 on BBC One in the U.K. No American release date has been announced yet, but seeing as it’s a co-production with HBO, you can probably expect it to air there soon. Sarah Phelps (Great Expectations) wrote the script, with a large cast that includes Rory Kinnear, Simon McBurney, and even the great Albus Dumbledore himself, Michael Gambon. (To be fair, using only English actors who didn’t play a part in the Harry Potter films would have been impossible). Check out the first trailer, chock-full of adult themes.
