The trailer for Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck sadly lets him tell the world he’s happy
Since we first reported on the upcoming documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, most of the attention has been focused on the treasure trove of unreleased recordings, home movies, artwork, and interviews that were made available to director Brett Morgan. What had not yet been discussed was the thick layer of irony that makes itself felt in this trailer for the film, which will air May 4 on HBO. The sound of Cobain’s voice describing how happy he is, how this is all he’s ever wanted to do, and how he gets cheerier with each passing day, adds an extra-deep element of incongruity to the often haunting images of his family and art that it accompanies. Notably absent is drummer Dave Grohl, though apparently that was simply because his interviews were conducted too close to Morgan’s deadline, and not because Courtney Love somehow stole the film stock and recut everything to her liking.
