The trailer for the new Netflix series The OA is all spooky setup
The new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series The OA raises far more questions than answers. The show centers on Brit Marling’s Prairie Johnson, a blind woman who goes missing for seven years and comes back with the ability to see. That’s really the only concrete setup we get in the trailer, which then switches gears to showcase mysterious montages, vague but poetic voice-over, and images that are very Stranger Things-esque. We do know, however, that Jason Isaacs, Scott Wilson, and Emory Cohen are all on hand during Prairie’s not-yet-clear story.
The OA is a passion project for Marling, who co-created and co-wrote the series along with her frequent collaborator, writer-director Zal Batmanglij (Sound Of My Voice, The East). Batmanglij is also directing The OA, which consists of eight one-hour episodes (or as Netflix puts it, “an odyssey in eight chapters”). The streaming platform also bills the series as “a powerful, mind-bending tale about identity, human connection, and the borders between life and death.” And it promises that The OA “upends notions about what long-format stories can be.” All that groundbreaking upending beings when The OA premieres on December 16.
